Golden Hill Visit

If you’ve followed this blog a little or know me in person, you know that a lot of my adventures usually involve Chris Ferarri – a super good friend of mine that I credit with saving my life once. I won’t get into the details of that, but he did save my life wether he wants to admit it or not, and I appreciate his company and the adventures we share. He can also take the credit for introducing me to home brewing, and a slew of other things that have made my life more productive and exciting.

My last blog-post was about screwing around in WNY’s ultra-north, and how my wife had a baby shower in the middle of the day up there. She and I didn’t have anything planned for the rest of the day, so we took up Chris and his lady Kaitlyn’s offer up to go visit them at Golden Hill state park, where they were camping for the weekend. I had never heard of the park, but a quick map search showed it was about 15 minutes north east of Lockport, right on Lake Ontario. It even had a lighthouse apparently – pretty big deal.

Erica and I made the trek out there even though the weather was threatening to ruin a potentially awesome time. Luckily, the weather broke up moments after we arrived, and the day ended up being great! For $20 a night for tent camping and $75 a night for Yurt camping, Golden Hill Park is an awesome destination, that in the grand scheme of things, isn’t too far away. With on site showers and bathrooms, you can camp or glamp, and enjoy sunsets on lake ontario in the presence of an oldschool lighthouse, nestled in the middle of the Niagara Wine Trail.

Erica and I showed up a little before dinner, and our hosts had quite the meal planned – to be cooked over an open flame! Kabobs, Tuna Steak, Sweet Potato, Zucchini Bread, Strawberries – picked that day, and Farm Fresh Eggs. It sounds like a random collection of food, but most of the meal came from the local area. The strawberries came from Becker farms, the Eggs and Zucchini bread came from a roadside stand – and to have it all cooked and warmed up over an open flame was a real treat.

Check the grill marks!

A little overdone in Chris’s book, but delicious in mine!

All in all, to reiterate what I mentioned in my last post, a drive through the country can make for a very therapeutic experience. Golden Hill will definitely see us again – certainly interested in renting a yurt! Good times, good food, good people. Thanks!
